Shanghai Waigaoqiao Haitong Terminal at the mouth of the Yangtze River is one of the largest automobile export terminals in China.
On the morning of February 24, three berths of Haitong Terminal “three ships docked together” to “river and sea transportation” to help China’s auto import and export.

In Haitong wharf, the yard can accommodate 40,000 cars in the yard, a variety of colors of cars head to tail, lined up full, waiting for arrangements on the ro-ro ship “out to sea”.
Outside the yard, flatbed trucks loaded with cars are constantly coming in.On the mooring bank, a car is being loaded onto a ro-ro ship …… here 24 hours a day.
Domestic automobiles, especially new energy automobiles busy export scene, in Haitong Terminal has become the norm, superimposed on the export of vehicles concentrated to the port, the ro-ro ship capacity is insufficient and other factors, the terminal yard resource constraints are becoming more and more prominent.
Upgrading the storage capacity of yards has become the main challenge for terminals to guarantee the steady growth of domestic automobile exports.
“Haitong Terminal currently has access to 289 ports in 131 countries and regions around the world.”Li Ming, on-duty manager of Haitong Terminal’s operations department, told reporters that Haitong Terminal has an integrated intelligent control system.
Through this system, the staff can lock the dock site where the vehicles are located, which further improves the dispatching time.
With the booming development of new energy vehicles, the terminal’s operation volume has also soared, with a single day’s operation volume of more than 7,000 vehicles.
Niu Yuanzheng from Huaibei, Anhui Province is a ro-ro driver in Haitong Terminal Operations Department, the young man has been working here for nearly 10 years, and he has witnessed the development of China’s automobile imports and exports in recent years: “Initially, it was mainly imported cars that arrived at the port, and in recent years, it was a large number of domestic cars that were exported, and now domestic new-energy vehicles are accounting for a rising proportion of the exports.”
In the cabin, the interval between cars is only 10 centimeters from left to right and 30 centimeters from front to back, so there are strict requirements for the size of the ro-ro drivers.
The staff wear different colored hats: the white hat is to send the car into the cabin.The red hat is responsible for taking over the backing up of the vehicle and securing the 4 wheels to the deck tie-downs.
The yellow hat directs the positioning of the vehicle.Everyone has a clear and organized division of labor, just to load as many vehicles as possible on the ship.
Shanghai Overseas Port, where Haitong Terminal is located, is the largest vehicle import and export port in China, which is attracting more and more automobile enterprises to export automobiles from overseas ports because of the advantages of good location, many routes, convenient transportation, and high quality of terminal ro-ro operations.
The throughput of the three port areas of Haitong Terminal will increase by nearly 15% in 2024.

In 2024, the Outer Harbor Customs supervised a total of 1,298,000 roll-on/roll-off exported automobiles, a year-on-year increase of 26.6%, of which 501,000 new energy automobiles were exported, a year-on-year increase of 38.5%, accounting for 38.6% of the total exports.
